When Was the Last Time You Unplugged?

I don’t know about you, but I’m not open for business 24/7. I have other life priorities (family, friends, sleeping, working out, etc) and hobbies (cooking/baking, traveling, photography, etc) that have nothing to do with my business. And I make time to pursue those as well.

You need to regularly unplug and rest, or you’re going to get burnt out and consumed by this blogging thing. And inevitably, you’ll start to hate it.

So I have some “stop and smell the roses” challenges for you. Give one or all of these a try:

  • Go for an entire weekend without turning your computer on. Weekends are the perfect time to give this a try because not as many people are online, and business isn’t typically being conducted. Go find something else to do.
  • Set regular working hours and stick to them. This will force you to get more done in less time, and then you’ll have more free time to explore hobbies.
  • Create a separate office space. Make the division between work and play very clear and don’t allow your work to bleed into other parts of your day (like family time or dinner time).
  • Find a hobby to pursue that doesn’t involve the computer. Get outside. Take a class. Do something that simply enriches who you are.

I think we forget how beautiful our world is. We work our lives away. Life is short. You need to spend some time enjoying it away from the computer.

I found this post particularly fitting, as I've been too internet-addicted over the last year, and as a result have become rather unfit and lost a number of offline social connections. I think I'll have to begin to unplug more during 2010. _ But a whole weekend away from the computer! – That's maybe asking a bit much. :)

Great post Lisa. :) I don't remember the last time I really unplugged. I sometimes fear that I'm already an internet addict. maybe it's time to get together with some friends. :)
