The Rick Steves Approach to Blogging

It’s really no secret that I love to travel. That’s a large reason why I’m in the profession that I’m in. Even less of a secret is my total love for all things Rick Steves. In my opinion, he writes the most practical and informed guidebooks out there, and I’ve saved thousands of dollars and thousands of headaches using them. I’m a Rick Steves groupie.

So I thought we’d do something fun today and look at the Rick Steves approach to blogging, based on some of his more recognizable quotes. By the way, Rick actually has a blog. You can find it here.

“We can travel in a way that exacerbates the problems between us and the rest of the world, or in a way that connects us with the rest of the world.”

I think the same can be said of blogging. You can choose to blog about things that divide us and cause unneeded controversy, or you can offer value to your audience and establish connections with others.

“It’s never too late to have a happy childhood, and age only matters if you’re a cheese.”

That’s what I love about being a blogger. It’s never too late to start your first blog, to make your blog better, or to reposition or redirect your blog.

“Travel, like the world, is a series of hills and valleys. If something’s not to your liking, change your liking. Travel is addicting. It can make you a happier American, as well as a citizen of the world.”

Blogging is also like a series of hills and valleys. There are going to be times when you peak, and there are going to be times when perhaps you’re in a slump. If something’s not working for you or your audience, change it.

Blogging is definitely addicting. If you have a passion for words and sharing your knowledge and experiences with others, there’s no better career for you out there.

When you become a blogger, you become a citizen of the world. That may sound cheesy, but I really believe it. I’m connecting with people in dozens of different countries on a daily basis. Their views and input are shaping my blogs. In a larger sense, when you’re active in social media, you can invoke worldwide change and understanding.

“Self-consciousness kills communication.”

I almost don’t want to write any commentary on this quotation because I think it’s just so powerful as is. A preoccupation with oneself, and one’s own blog, is going to just kill you in the blogging realm. If you’re never giving back to the community, it’ll just never work out.

“Smart consumers should know what all the options are.”

Smart bloggers should know what all the options are. When I think about this, the first thing that comes to mind is monetization. Most bloggers immediately think of Google AdSense and banner ads as a way to monetize. Be aware of all the other options though, like selling your own products, affiliate marketing, creating a membership site, sponsorships, etc.

I hope this post was a nice, light breath of fresh air! :)
